It started in Turkey then in Syria and later in Lebanon.<\/h3>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1900-1912: Lebanon YWCA<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Meetings in homes for Bible study and fellowship.<\/li>\n<li>Work among students in mission schools.<\/li>\n<li>The first local committee organized to work among women in Beirut.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1920: Post War Lebanon<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Initiation of YWCA \u2018Service Center\u2019 at Jessie Taylor Memorial School, marking the first Center in Lebanon, the Beirut YWCA.<\/li>\n<li>Opening of first hostel for girls.<\/li>\n<li>Introduction of educational and recreational programs for women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1924-1927: Move to Downtown Beirut Business Area<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Work with children and Armenian refugees.<\/li>\n<li>Introduction of Language and Business Classes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1927\u20131935: Move to Fakhry Bey Street<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>First summer camp for girls at Araya.<\/li>\n<li>Development of The Girl Reserves Movement.<\/li>\n<li>Edma Bayouth, first Lebanese woman co-opted into the work of the YWCA.<\/li>\n<li>Research on working conditions of women and girls in factories which prompted work on:<\/li>\n<li>Problem of child labor.<\/li>\n<li>Working conditions for women (Long hours, poor wages and malnutrition).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1936 \u20131940: Results of YWCA Research and Action<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Formation of Nutrition camps in Beirut and the mountains.<\/li>\n<li>Introduction of Night schools in different sections of Beirut<\/li>\n<li>Inspection of factories with the help of YWCA volunteers and dismissal of underage children.<\/li>\n<li>Team of A.U.B. student volunteers teaching in night schools.<\/li>\n<li>Formation of a volunteer committee, including experts, to work on a labor law with special stress on child labor. This led to Legislation No.1946 stipulating:<\/li>\n<li>8 hours work\/day<\/li>\n<li>Maternity leave\/sick leave<\/li>\n<li>Non-employment of children under 13 years of age<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1940-1943:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Shift from American leadership to Lebanese<\/li>\n<li>Work with displaced persons.<\/li>\n<li>Introduction of Business girls clubs.<\/li>\n<li>Special attention given to Leadership training for women.<\/li>\n<li>Introduction of day camps for children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1944 \u20131948:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Beirut YWCA programs housed in five rented localities.<\/li>\n<li>Decision to have a YWCA building.<\/li>\n<li>First building campaign.<\/li>\n<li>Work with Palestinian refugees.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1951- 1962:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Vocational School established with the support of Point IV, the U.S. aid program.<\/li>\n<li>Beirut day nursery initiated.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase of plot in Ain Mreisseh and plans set for the building.<\/li>\n<li>First Flower Show.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1967:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Inauguration of YWCA-Beirut building in Ain Mraisseh.<\/li>\n<li>Initiation of education programs for working mothers with children at the day nursery.<\/li>\n<li>Employment office started to help graduates of the vocational school.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1978\u20131991: Civil War in Lebanon<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Special emphasis on emergency relief work and rehabilitation for displaced Lebanese.<\/li>\n<li>Maintained standard of education and services, stopping only briefly in extremely dangerous conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>1992\u20131999:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Emphasis on developing young women leaders.<\/li>\n<li>Updating of vocational programs.<\/li>\n<li>The YWCA called on by the Ministry of Education to help plan the public vocational training programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>2000\u20132003:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Resumption of flower and Plants Show.<\/li>\n<li>New age series added to the Technical College Programs.<\/li>\n<li>Introduction of new image to YWCA-Beirut:<\/li>\n<li>Face lift to the existing logo<\/li>\n<li>Printing of new brochures<\/li>\n<li>Launching of Website<\/li>\n<li>Revival of the newsletter<\/li>\n<li>Initiation of The Community Service Committee for the support of Women in the Central<br \/>\nPrison of Baabda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>2004-2009:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Establishment of \u201cCare for the Environment\u201d and \u201cCenter for Women in Crisis\u201d Committees.<\/li>\n<li>Refurbishing of The Y Cultural Center by a donation from the People of Japan.<\/li>\n<li>Addition of the third floor to the existing 2 floors of the YWCA Hostel.<\/li>\n<li>The YWCA Beirut became accessible to persons with disabilities.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Towards Inclusive Development in Lebanon\u2019: The YWCA selected as an association suitable for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in social and economic life.<\/li>\n<li>The priorities of CWIC revised to: The empowerment of women at all levels. Several projects implemented to serve this objective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"his_list\">\n<h4>2010:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>First annual celebration of the International Women\u2019s day on March 8<\/li>\n<li>Hobbies and Skills program initiated<\/li>\n<li>Home Care training workshops started<\/li>\n<li>&#8221; Get Inspired\u201d program introduced by the Leadership Committee<\/li>\n<li>YWCA became a member of Women in Parliament coalition<\/li>\n<li>YWCA-Beirut elected as coordinator of Women in Parliament coalition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>We are still going on energized by the dedication and persistence of YWCA volunteers\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Reference: \u201cThe Lebanon YWCA, one hundred years of service\u201d by Leila Shaheen Da Cruz<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>2014:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Cadmos Rotary Club donated full equipment to establish a learning kitchen<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>on the second floor<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Leadership Committee initiated the first <b>Book Club<\/b> meeting<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><br \/>\n2015:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>SALTO-YOUTH EUROMED<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">YWCA-Beirut received the EUROPEAN VOLUNTARY SERVICE accreditation as a sending and receiving of volunteers. Youth mobility from and to EU.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><br \/>\n2017:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">ESMOD moves to USJ campus<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">4th floor is turned into a fully equipped hostel for girls<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">YWCA- has now 4 floors-dedicated to accommodate up to 120 working women and students<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">All programs still going on\u2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>2020:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">Spread of pandemic COVID 19 in Lebanon<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Some business closed<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Universities turned to online teaching<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Hostel worked at 20% capacity number of residents<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Cessation of activities, and meetings in house due to continuous lockdowns<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">YWCA-Beirut turned to zoom meetings and presentations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>4th of August blast<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">The 9 floor building of the YWCA was badly damaged<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">All floors were hit above and underground due to impact: 4 hostel residents were injured.
